Dragobete, the traditional lovers' day in Romania, is celebrated on February 24, ten days after the Western European and
American counterpart Valentine's Day.

Dragobete, ziua tradițională a iubirii în România, este sărbătorită în 24
februarie, la zece zile după Ziua Îndrăgostiților din Europa Occidentală
și Americană.






The Dragobete traditional story goes that, clothed with holiday suits, young men and women meet in front of the church and go
searching the woods and meadows for spring flowers.


Povestea tradițională a lui Dragobete este că, îmbrăcați în costume
tradiționale, tineri și femei se întâlnesc în fața bisericii și merg să
caute pădurile și pajiștile pentru flori de primăvară.




They sit around fire on the hills of the village and talk. At noon, the
girls run to the village, each followed by one boy who had
fallen for them. If the boy is fast and reaches the girl of his choice
and if she likes him, she kisses him in front of everyone.


Apoi se așează  în jurul focului pe dealurile satului și vorbesc. La prânz,
fetele alergă la sat, fiecare urmată de un băiat ales. Dacă băiatul este
rapid și ajunge la fata la alegerea lui și dacă îi place, îl sărută în
fața tuturor.

This tradition triggered the expression “Dragobete kisses the girls!”
(Dragobetele saruta fetele). The kiss show the two lovers' engagement,
Dragobete being an opportunity to show the love in front of the
community.



Această tradiție a declanșat expresia "Dragobetele sărută fetele!" (Dragobetele saruta fetele). Sărutul arată
dragostea celor doi iubiți, Dragobete fiind o oportunitate de a arăta
dragostea în fața comunității.





There are a number of Dragobete customs in rural areas, many of which are not kept by modern Romanians anymore.

Există o serie de obiceiuri de Dragobete în zonele rurale, multe dintre acestea nu mai sunt păstrate de românii moderni.






On this day, no animals are sacrificed because it would ruin the point of
mating. In the old days, single women used to gather the
last remnants of snow, called “the fairies’ snow”, and the water
resulted from the melted snow was used throughout the year for various
beauty treatments and love spells.


În această zi, niciun animal nu este sacrificat, deoarece ar distruge
punctul de împerechere. În vremurile vechi, femeile singure au adunat
ultimele rămășițe de zăpadă, numite zăpada "zânei", iar apa rezultată
din zăpada topită a fost folosită pe tot parcursul anului pentru
diferite tratamente de frumusețe și vrăji de dragoste.



The tradition goes that men should not hurt women, nor argue with them, otherwise they will not do well the
whole year. Youngsters believe that on this day they should be joyous
and respect the holiday, so that they can be in love the whole year.


Tradiția spune că bărbații nu ar trebui să facă rău femeilor și nici să se certe
cu ele, altfel nu vor face bine întregul an. Tinerii cred că în această
zi ar trebui să fie bucuroși și să respecte sărbătoarea, astfel încât
să se poată îndrăgosti  tot anul.




Modern Romanians embraced Valentine’s Day in the early ‘90s. More recently, a new movement has emerged in Romania - that of
celebrating the traditional holiday instead of what is seen as the
commercial, Western European -imported celebration. Bar and clubs
organize Dragobete-themed nights, media outlets put up themed campaigns
to remind Romanians of their traditional holiday…


Romanii moderni au îmbrățișat Valentine`s Day la începutul anilor '90. Mai
recent, a apărut o nouă mișcare în România - aceea de sărbătorire a
sărbătorii tradiționale, în loc de ceea ce este văzut ca celebrarea
comercială, în Europa de Vest, importată. Barurile și cluburile
organizează nopți cu tematică de Dragobete, m-media a lansat campanii
tematice pentru a le reaminti românilor de sărbătoarea lor tradițională
...
